Take Part in the "Allium on Fehmarn" Photo Contest and Save the Bees!

Get your camera ready, nature lovers! The Beekeeping Association Insel Fehmarn of 1873 and the Environmental Council of the City of Fehmarn have teamed up to create an exciting photo competition that offers a chance to win some terrific prizes while helping save our pollinators.

Why should you care? Insects, often overshadowed, play a crucial role on our planet: they account for over 90% of all living species on Earth. Without them, our plates would be nearly empty of fruits and vegetables, as a whopping 80% of cultivated plants rely on their pollination! However, these tiny helpers are under constant pressure, and spots like Fehmarn are no exception. After the rape blossom in spring, there's often a "crop gap" on the island—a dearth of pollen and nectar that can be dangerous for honeybees and wild bees.

But there's hope! You, yes you, can make a difference by participating in the "Allium on Fehmarn" photo contest. These small (but mighty!) Allium plants, better known as ornamental garlic, provide an excellent food source for wild bees and are also beautiful additions to any garden or public space. By capturing blooming Allium plants with your phone and sending your entry to [email protected] by September 30, 2025, you can contribute to promoting biodiversity and support our vital pollinators.

Here's what awaits the winners:

1st Prize: 7 Bingo tickets + 10 Allium bulbs2nd Prize: 5 Bingo tickets + 10 Allium bulbs3rd Prize: 3 Bingo tickets + 5 Allium bulbs

Remember, though, this contest is likely funded by the Bingo Lottery, which supports environmental projects spotlighted every Sunday at 5 PM on NDR television. For more details, please contact the Environmental Council Fehmarn at Am Markt 1, 04371 / 506-654 or [email protected].

While the specifics for the "Allium on Fehmarn" photo contest are not widely documented, here's a rough idea of what you might expect from such contests:

  • Eligibility: Open to amateur and professional photographers (though age and locality restrictions may apply)
  • Photo Requirements: Featuring Allium flowers or related subjects in Fehmarn is essential. Original, minimally edited photos with high resolution are preferred.
  • Submission Guidelines: Commonly, photos may be submitted via an online portal, email, or designated platform, with limited entries and specified file sizes/resolutions.
  • Prizes: Typically cash or equipment, with special prizes for the most popular photo or thematic categories.
  • Deadlines: Submissions generally open in the spring, with a few weeks for entries before judging begins, followed by prize announcements within a month of the deadline.
