In a bid to maintain cleanliness in septic tanks without breaking the bank, homeowners and cottage owners can turn to a simple and affordable method. This approach involves the use of a combination of ferrous sulfate and soda (either sodium carbonate or sodium bicarbonate).

The solution, once prepared, is poured directly into the septic tank. This method, while considered a folk remedy, has proven to be effective in neutralizing unpleasant odors and cleaning the walls of the septic tank structure. Soda, in particular, helps soften water and accelerates the breakdown of deposits in the tank.

Ferrous sulfate, known for its strong antiseptic properties, suppresses the development of bacteria causing unpleasant odors. When used in the house, the composition can be flushed through the toilet or sink to enter the system and begin to act. Within a few days, the sharp odor in the septic tank disappears, and drains become less thick.

It's important to note that while this method offers a cost-effective alternative to expensive septic tank maintenance methods, it should not be expected to fully replace professional septic pumping or advanced mechanical treatments. Septic tank maintenance typically involves mechanical removal of sludge and scum, a task that chemicals may not fully accomplish.

Without routine pumping, sludge accumulates regardless of chemical dosing, eventually harming system function. Professional services also inspect and maintain drain fields, a task that chemicals alone cannot replace. There are no validated peer-reviewed studies or regulatory guidelines confirming that ferrous sulfate plus soda is reliably effective or recommended for septic tank cleanliness maintenance.

When working with ferrous sulfate, safety precautions are necessary. Gloves should be used, and contact with the skin and eyes should be avoided for safe use and health preservation. All the components for the solution can be purchased at a nearby hardware or construction store.

For prevention, the procedure can be repeated monthly during the warm season. The mixture is safe when used in the correct dosage and does not damage concrete walls or have an aggressive effect on pipes. To prepare the solution, combine 250 grams of ferrous sulfate and 100 grams of soda in a five-liter plastic bottle, then fill with cold water and shake until dissolved. Hot water should not be used in the preparation process, as it reduces the solution's effectiveness.

While this method offers a cost-effective solution for maintaining septic tank cleanliness, it's always advisable to consult septic system professionals or environmental engineers to ensure proper dosing, local regulatory conformity, and avoidance of unintended impacts such as harmful byproducts or drain field clogging.
