Landshut, a city in Bavaria, has taken a significant step towards promoting biodiversity by implementing a nature garden certification program. This initiative, which began in 2019, is a joint effort by the city's Biodiversity Consultation, located in the Office for Environmental, Climate, and Nature Conservation, and the Landshut district association for horticulture and landscaping e.V.

The aim of the action is to preserve and foster local animal and plant life, as well as biodiversity in gardens. To achieve this, nature gardens must offer a high level of ecological diversity. Important points for certification include the renunciation of chemical plant protection agents, chemical-synthetic fertilizers, and the use of peat.

Other elements that positively influence the assessment include uncut perennials and flowers, site-appropriate deciduous and fruit trees, extensive meadow elements, and beneficial habitats such as insect hotels. The garden must also provide a suitable habitat for various species, encouraging the diversity of habitats.

The initiative for the certification of nature-friendly private gardens in Landshut came from a CSU faction application in 2019. This was met with support from the SPD application for 'Promoting the planting of private gardens with flowering plants.' The city covers the costs for certification, as determined in the resolution of the Environmental Council.

Since 2022, the city of Landshut has been participating in the 'Bayern blooms - Nature Garden' certification action. Additional information on the certification process can be found online at www.our website/naturgarten, and further details can be found on the website of the Bavarian State Association for Horticulture and Landscaping at [www.gartenbauvereine.org/service/gartenzertifizierung/].

Garden owners who design and maintain their garden in a nature-friendly way are invited to participate in the certification. Successful certification results in a 'Nature Garden Plaque' for the garden fence and a certificate. Those interested in having their garden certified can register at [email protected]. A team of experts will then visit the garden for certification.

Elisabeth Lex-Wagner, the city's biodiversity consultant, emphasizes the importance of preserving and promoting local animal and plant life in the garden. She encourages all garden owners to consider participating in this program and contributing to the city's efforts to boost biodiversity.

This year, the nature garden certification is taking place again, giving residents another opportunity to make a positive impact on their local environment.
