Grinding More Than Bread: Mill Day Unveils Hidden Gems
Celebratory Event Unveils Infrastructure: Mill Day Showcases Construction Mix - Commission plays a part in assembling the document for review.
Hey there, buckaroo! Strap on your boots and get ready to venture back in time on Pentecost Monday (June 9th), as numerous mills in North Rhine-Westphalia that have been off-limits to the public will open their doors! This 32nd German Mill Day will celebrate a craft that once ruled the land, one driven by water, wind, and even muscular beasts.
The whole shebang was kicked off by the German Society for Milling and Mill Preservation, with the Rhineland Regional Council (LVR) in Cologne announcing the festivities. Thousands of history enthusiasts are expected at multiple locations throughout North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW). Some venues will put on demonstrations, nature walks, or guided bike tours.
A Blast from the Past
The wonders exhibited during Mill Day serve as cultural and technological time capsules, primarily owned by private entities and normally hidden from public eyes. Associations, owners, and museums will give visitors a peek behind the curtain, shedding light on the technology that harnessed water, wind, and animal power.
Don't you know, back in the day, there were oodles and oodles of mills in North Rhine-Westphalia! These powerhouses processed everything from grain and oil to gunpowder, sawed wood, churned paper, and recycled rags. As Julia König, the gal who coordinates Mill Day at the LVR in Cologne, puts it: "Many folks still remember the mill in their neck of the woods."
In the mill country of Rhineland, nestled between the Erft, Wupper, and Sieg rivers, a slew of mills, hammer mills, and water power plants are eager to welcome visitors. If Old Man Wind whips up enough grit, the windmill in Grottenhertener (Rhein-Erft-Kreis) should be crankin' and crankin'. The LVR-Industriemuseum Bergisch Gladbach paper mill will offer kiddos the chance to dive into the wild world of water power! And nearby Altenberg (Rheinisch-Bergischer Kreis), a guided hike about powder mills in the Dhünntal valley is up for grabs, featuring former facilities for black powder productions.
