Ringing in the Spirit: A Modern Symphony Resounds Through Frankfurt's Heart on Pentecost Eve

Ringing City Bells in Celebration of Pentecost With a Fresh Tone - City bells in metropolis chime differently on Pentecost holiday

The streets of Frankfurt resonate with an captivating symphony of sound each year on the eve of Pentecost. Known as the Grand City Chimes, this mesmerizing open-air meditation features 50 bells from various churches ringing out in harmony, a harmonious tradition dating back to the mid-19th century.

In this year's performance, the nine bells of the Imperial Cathedral, including the illustrious Gloriosa, the city's most renowned and heaviest bell, will join forces with bells from ten city center churches, such as the Paulskirche, Katharinenkirche, and Old Nikolaikirche on the Römerberg.

A Fresh Survey of Sounds

This year's Grand City Chimes performance will echo through the city streets between 4:30 and 5:00 PM. Composed by members of the Ensemble Modern, a creative collective of international soloists based in Frankfurt, the sounds are set to be a more immersive experience.

Entitled "supra urbem" (above the city) in Latin, this modern symphony will continue to resonate on the eve of Pentecost annually, whilst the traditional version composed by Mainzer Glockensachverständiger Paul Smets in 1954 will be preserved for the remaining dates – Christmas Eve, the Saturday before Easter Sunday, and other significant occasions.

Individual Chimes, Harmonious Whole

Unlike previous performances, this year’s rendition of the Grand City Chimes will begin with the bells being heard separately, from the highest tones down to the lowest. After around 15 minutes, the multitude of melodious tones will unite, bringing forth the familiar overall sound.

Originating in 1856, the Grand City Chimes have become a cherished carillon performance tradition in the heart of Frankfurt am Main.
