Ceramic pieces can indeed double as furniture. A creative artisan is pioneering this innovative trend.
2025 saw a remarkable breakthrough for Brooklyn ceramic artist Devin Wilde. His strikingly unique collection of oversized vessels, inspired by the iconic brownstone row houses of his childhood, grabbed the spotlight of collectors and aficionados alike. But for Wilde, those arrangements were merely the stepping stones, a means to hone his artistic sensibility and voice in a competitive industry.
This year, Wilde amped up his game, both in size and creativity. His expanding oeuvre now encompasses small tables and furniture pieces, each one a bold declaration of his fascination with handling larger forms.
'I've always craved the heft of sculpting at this scale,' Wilde, a former architectural alum from Stanford, confesses to our website. 'I've developed a newfound appreciation for the fine-tuned design and engineering that's essential to making these grand structures stand tall - It's a complex ballet that keeps them upright.'
For NYCxDesign, Wilde has unveiled Series No. II, an exclusive range of ceramic side and libation tables. The collection made its debut at Love House last week, with further pieces on display at Lawson Fenning's New York showroom.
Wilde's aesthetic is an intriguing amalgamation of classical architecture, Art Deco, and postmodern influences, encompassing their geometric shapes and column motifs. His glazes, inspired by oxidized metal and weathered stone, imbue a sense of discovered antiquity, as if an ancient artifact was dredged from an Italian lake.
'Devin has a remarkable knack for breathing new life into classic designs,' Lawson Fenning's co-founder Glenn Lawson marvels. 'There's an undeniable charisma in his work, even in its fledgling stages.'
In the pipeline for next year, Wilde is planning a collaborative lighting collection with friends working in wood, metal, and ceramics. His long-term aspiration is to open a Brooklyn showroom. Although specific details for 2026 are scant, Wilde's unwavering devotion to his craft ensures his work maintains its integrity, no matter the scale.
