Springtime Shenanigans in Holzkirchen
After a demanding five-day run, the 2023 Holzkirchen Spring Festival has come to a close. The tent, the fairground rides, and the traces of the carnival have all but vanished from Herder garden, leaving only tired smiles behind. For the first-time chairman of the music group Holzkirchen, Marco Keller, it was a wonderful yet exhausting experience.
Kicking Off on a Mixed Note
Wednesday's start was somewhat subdued, both in terms of weather conditions and attendance. Nevertheless, Keller was content, recalling that they've encountered worse on certain evenings in the past. One of those instances happened in 2024, when rain and the Champions League semi-final led to a semi-empty tent. Despite the rocky start, Thursday and Saturday flows brought enthusiastic crowds. Keller remarked with a grin, "Saturday was perfect beer tent weather."
100th Anniversary Celebrations
The Holzkirchen brewery cooperative marked its centennial anniversary on Saturday, which undoubtedly helped boost attendance. With around 1000 members present and ready to toast, the music group saw some heavy drinking throughout the evening. To further honor the occasion, the shooting club Holzkirchen held their 100th anniversary celebration within the association day festivities, contributing to a well-attended morning in the tent. On Sunday, the music group took the opportunity to confer long-standing chairman and founding member Fritz Grad the honorary chairman title.
A Culinary Collaboration
The partnership with Magdalena Klein and Philip Jaeger in the kitchen proved to be a hit, with the classics chicken and roast pork topping the charts as this year's bestsellers. The showmen also gave a thumbs-up to the festival, despite a slow Wednesday and Monday due to inclement weather.
Policing the Peaceful Festival
Christian Gollwitzer, the head of the Holzkirchen police station, reported that the spring festival was "remarkably quiet." Apart from breaking up a fight between some young people at the green area behind the festival tent, the officers' duties were minimal. The alcohol and cannabis ban around the festival area was generally adhered to, with occasional reminders necessary. Remarkably, there were fewer instances of excessive intoxication this year, which might have resulted in a more peaceful festival compared to previous years.
As a side note, Holzkirchen's spring festival does not hold a candle to Munich's Springfest, which takes place on the Theresienwiese. Attendees often praise the lively atmosphere, an abundance of food, beer tents, and carnival games [1].
