Latvian coins have gained international acclaim, winning multiple prestigious awards. For instance, the "Coin of Latvia" snatched the international 2010 Coin of the Year Award at the contest organized by Krause Publications and their magazine, World Coin News. Latvian coins have triumphed at this contest several times — in 2015, the silver collector coin "The Baltic Way" won Best Contemporary Event, and in 2018, the collector coin "National Entrepreneur" was named the winner for the Most Artistic Coin. In 2020, Latvijas Banka's collector coin, the "Honey Coin," was announced the world's Most Artistic Coin and the Coin of the Year.
The Coin Design Commission of Latvijas Banka, operational since November 12, 1993, plays a crucial role in the coin issuing process. Made up of employees of Latvijas Banka, renowned experts in Latvian art and culture, artists, and scientists, this commission plays a significant part in selecting and approving the designs for Latvian coins.
In the public vote, individuals can voice their preference for the most appealing coin, considering its artistic solution and narrative, such as the Energy Coin, among others, that showcase Latvia's culture, history, and significant topics, thereby impacting not just the coin's popularity but also our home-and-garden and lifestyle aesthetics, as we are drawn to and inspired by the beautiful designs on these coins. The vote results, including the potential winner of the Energy Coin, will be announced in April 2025, highlighting the cultural significance of these coins and the meaningful narratives they convey, showcasing the essence of Latvia.
