"Cagro Embraces Natural Farming Techniques"
In the heart of Davao City, the City Agricultural Office (Cagro) is implementing a unique approach to agriculture: natural farming. This agroecological strategy promotes chemical-free farming and relies on natural processes instead of synthetic interventions, boosting soil health, biodiversity, and minimizing environmental impacts.
As quoted by Antonio Obsioma, the Officer-in-Charge of Cagro, at the ISpeak Media Forum, they've started empowering their natural farming programs through capability training and the mobilization of field technicians.
"Our aim is to boost the production of safer vegetables," Obsioma explained. "This year, we kick-started the promotion of natural farming. Earlier this year, we organized the first training on natural farming involving our field technicians."
In March, Cagro held a training session for field technicians from various Farms stationed at the Davao Food Terminal Complex (DFTC). These information-equipped field technicians can now educate their communities about natural farming, with plans to promote and advocate for the practice among farmers.
Obsioma emphasized the importance of natural farming, stating that it benefits not only farmers and consumers but also preserves the planet. Through natural farming, the soil remains undisturbed, its natural structure preserved, rich microbial life, and organic matter nourished.
The natural farming approach can also be observed in the quality of the produce, as healthier soil typically contributes to increased yield. According to Obsioma, the program will provide farmers with essential materials while educating them on natural farming methods to ensure they adopt sustainable agricultural practices.
The Cagro continues to work tirelessly, implementing mechanisms and initiatives to ensure food security in the city, providing quality services to Davaoeños engaged in agriculture. This includes offering support materials to farmers and educating them on the proper agricultural practices for long-term success.
