In a significant move, the future of the Salzmannbau in Düsseldorf has been secured for the long term. The new contract, signed in 2022, extends the current usage concept of the historic building until the end of 2063.

Originally the headquarters of the paper manufacturer Jagenberg, the Salzmannbau was declared a historic monument in 1984. After a long renovation phase, the Jugendstil building complex was ready for occupancy in 1994.

Today, the Salzmannbau houses 85 social and student apartments, 36 residential and artist studios, and office spaces for non-profit organizations. It also accommodates the Bürgerhaus Bilk, Kunstraum Düsseldorf, Atelier am Eck, and Jazz-Schmiede, offering attractive exhibition and event spaces.

People are at the centre of the agreement for LEG Immobilien AG. Thomas Geisel, the Mayor of Düsseldorf, expressed his delight at securing the long-term future of the Salzmannbau. The commitment of citizens in the early 1980s led to the current usage concept of the Salzmannbau, with the city of Düsseldorf, "Leben in der Fabrik e.V." association, the state of NRW, and the then state-owned LEG developing the concept.

Dr. Volker Wiegel, COO of LEG Immobilien AG, was involved in the agreement. Jost Budde, spokesperson for the tenants' council in the Salzmannbau, expressed gratitude to Mayor Geisel and his team, the cultural department, and the housing department.

While the new contract secures the current usage concept of the Salzmannbau, the specific details about its future beyond 2063 are yet to be announced. For authoritative and current details, one might consider consulting official Düsseldorf city sources or the management responsible for the Salzmannbau.

However, it is clear that the sozio-cultural centre in the Salzmannbau, originally an industrial wasteland in the Bilk district, will be preserved long-term, ensuring its continued contribution to the cultural landscape of Düsseldorf.

The new contract for the Salzmannbau extends its utilization, encompassing not only residential and office spaces but also the promotion of sustainable living, home-and-garden, and lifestyle initiatives, till 2063. This long-term commitment to the Salzmannbau will further bolster the city's dedication to sustainable-living practices and its ongoing enhancement of the local culture, home, and garden scene.
