This project was tailored for a friend's bathroom, but we opted for a farmhouse style. It adds a touch of rustic flair to the bathroom and transforms the mundane into something captivating.
Now, here's the catch: the original mirror was shattered, so our friend needed to purchase a new one. A 3'x5' frameless mirror usually costs about $50.
You might wonder, "Why not buy a ready-made framed mirror instead?" Let's clarify that.
A 3'x5' mirror with a frame can cost over $300, and it may not suit the farmhouse aesthetic we had in mind. This DIY mirror frame will only set you back an additional $25 on the base mirror price!

Materials and Tools Required:
- Wood:
- 3 - 1x4x8 faux barnwood planks
- 1 - 1x2 cut to 4 1/2' length
- Hardware:
- 3 - 3-inch wood screws
- 3 - 1/2-inch wood screws
- 4 - Kreg Jig screws
- Wood glue
- 3 frame hanger loops
- 4 - 6 spring loaded mirror clips (optional)
- 6 - 2 1/2-inch wood screws (optional)
- Tools:
- Miter saw
- Kreg Jig
- Drill with bits
- Level
- Stud finder (optional)
Let's begin with the mirror installation (if you haven't done so already):
- Mirror: You'll need the mirror together with the spring loaded mirror clips, 6 - 2 1/2-inch wood screws, and a stud finder.
- Mirror Installation: Use the stud finder to locate the studs. Attach the clips to the studs using the wood screws. Choose to use three clips at the bottom and three at the top.
Choose Your Wood:
- Cost-effective: With fluctuating lumber prices, research to find the best deal. You can also explore reclaimed wood for an authentic farmhouse look.
- Stain or Paint: Choose a paint color or stain that complements your preferred wood finish. Consider using spray paints like Krylon's chalk finish, crackle, or stone for easy application.
Assemble Your Frame:
- Measure and cut the barnwood planks: Cut them to the necessary lengths using the miter saw. For a 3'x5' mirror, use the following measurements as a guide: Two 3' 7 1/2" pieces for the sides and two 5' 7 1/2" pieces for the top and bottom, all with 45° angles.
- Prepare the stabilizer: Cut the 1x2 down to 4 1/2' in length.
- Install the stabilizer: Mount the 4 1/2' piece above the mirror, securing it with the 3-inch wood screws. Use the stud finder to ensure you hit the wood studs.
- Secure the frame: After the stabilizer, insert three evenly spaced 1/2-inch wood screws into the stabilizer, keeping them partially recessed for the frame hanging loops.
- Assemble the frame: Using a Kreg Jig, drill a pilot hole in the center of each joint. Next, glue and clamp the wood pieces together. Insert Kreg Jig screws into the glued pieces.
- Attach the frame loops: Mount the frame hanger loops to the back of the frame at the top, aligning with the screws.
- Hang your beautiful new mirror frame!
