Brits prepare to increase charitable giving during the Christmas season
In a recent study published by WRS Insurance Brokers, a charity insurance specialist, it has been revealed that the festive spirit of giving continues to bolster through the UK, despite many households facing financial difficulties.
The research indicates that people's generosity remains strong, even in times of financial struggle. A significant number of respondents, 79%, are planning to maintain their charitable contributions this Christmas, with 13% pledging to give even more. Conversely, only 6% of respondents are planning to reduce their donations.
While the total number of donors has declined sharply, nearly 4 million fewer since 2019, those who continue to give are donating more on average. In 2024, £15.4 billion was given, with an average donation of £72. This trend is attributed to a smaller but more generous donor base giving larger amounts.
Public trust in UK charities remains consistently high, with 57% of people reporting high trust and positive sentiments towards the Charity Commission. This high trust encourages support, especially during challenging times.
Charities are under significant operational and financial pressure due to surging costs, declining government grants, and rising social needs. This urgency motivates continued or increased giving by committed donors who want to sustain essential services.
Interestingly, over 50% of respondents claim they're most likely to support community charities this festive season. A significant number, 52%, also intend to volunteer their time. Furthermore, 29% of respondents will share donation opportunities on social media.
However, the research does not provide specific numbers on the percentage of people giving back despite financial difficulties, nor does it reveal the amount or value of donations being made by those in financial difficulties. It also does not discuss the impact of charitable contributions on the financial situation of those in difficulty.
Gungor Baykan, head of broking and operations at WRS Insurance Brokers, commented on the findings, saying, "People's generosity and commitment to giving at this time of year remains strong."
