Bracket Clock by Junghans - Maintenance of Internal Mechanism
Restoring a 1911 Junghans Bracket Clock: A Comprehensive Overhaul
A 1911 Junghans time and strike bracket clock, known for its German craftsmanship and robust movements, recently underwent a thorough restoration. The clock, initially running briefly after acquisition, encountered issues and required extensive repairs.
The mechanical overhaul began with the complete disassembly of the movement. Seven bushings were installed during re-assembly, with three on the time side and four on the strike side, including a 4.5mm bushing for the count wheel. The movement was taken apart five times during repairs, and during disassembly, it was discovered that the motion works centre arbour pivot was stuck in the backplate.
The worn pivots and bushings were replaced to restore smooth gear rotation, and the mainsprings were re-tensioned to ensure proper power delivery. The count lever, which consistently missed the half-hour strike on the Junghans clock, was carefully inspected and repaired to maintain accurate timekeeping.
The clock's coil motor or alarm mechanisms, if present, may suffer from coil burnout or winding damage, requiring specialist repair or rewinding. In this case, the movement was serviced at least once, as indicated by an "S" mark on the strike side barrel cap. However, the electrical components did not require any immediate attention, as the clock was running smoothly after cleaning and adjustments.
The movement exudes quality, with solid front and back plates and lantern pinions favored over cut pinions. A new suspension spring was replaced, and the mainsprings, though in good condition, were found to have more oil than necessary within the barrels. The excess oil was removed, and appropriate clock oils were used to reduce friction.
The clock's Regency style veneered mahogany case, though in reasonably good shape, required some attention. A small piece of veneer was missing on the front right corner, and replacement chrome feet were added. After cleaning and a few new bushings, the Junghans clock is now on the test stand, ready for a long-overdue trial run.
After cleaning, oiling, and several small adjustments, the Junghans movement is now running and striking as it should. The paddle, which was hanging off one of the points of the star wheel, has been properly aligned, and the clock is once again keeping accurate time.
In summary, servicing a 1911 Junghans bracket clock involves careful mechanical overhaul, cleaning, parts replacement as needed, and specialist repair of any electrical coil components, with attention to preserving the movement’s original architecture and functionality. This restoration has breathed new life into this piece of German clockmaking history, ensuring it continues to tick and tock for many years to come.
