Board of Directors Profile: Charles (Chuck) Frank
Meet Chuck Frank, the latest addition to our Board of Directors and a founding member of our organization!
Chuck Frank is a versatile explorer who feels just as comfortable on trails as he does on waterways. He's stoked about his recent kayaking adventure off the southern coast of Crete, Greece. However, his true passion lies in the American West, where he's hiked on countless trails.
Growing up on the North Shore of Chicago, Chuck cultivated a deep love for the outdoors at a young age. Once a nine-year-old canoeing enthusiast, he's now an avid hiker, backpacker, kayaker, fisherman, biker, ice climber, and backcountry skier. In case you're curious, there's one unconventional way to get to a primo fishing spot: hike in with your gear!
When Chuck isn't setting sail on his next adventure, you might find him with a book in hand, crafting words as passionately as he does in the outdoors. His lifelong hobby of reading even finds its way into his backpacking trips, ensuring intellectual stimulation alongside the natural beauty.
Chuck's adventure-loving spirit and knack for fostering connections catapulted him into a successful career in the auto industry, where he operated eight franchises across three locations. In his semi-retirement, he's partnered with his daughter in Mathnasium Learning Centers and other education-focused ventures.
At American Hiking, we've witnessed Chuck's connection to trails permeating various aspects of his life. We're thrilled to share his insight, vision, and undying passion for the outdoors with you all!
Here's a glimpse into our chat with Chuck:
How does backpacking resonate with you?
Backpacking provides more than just a chance to be with family; it offers opportunities to engage in activities I adore. I'm awestruck by the tranquil beauty of mountains, take solace in the quietude they offer, and relish the opportunity to fish, capture photos, read, and write while in the wilderness.
Can you share one of your favorite hiking spots?
It's tough to pick a favorite, but I've hiked the Wind River Mountains' Jim Bridger Wilderness and the Sawtooths in Idaho multiple times. The Sawtooths are particularly appealing because, unlike other mountains, they don't soar as high, with peaks usually at around 8,000 feet compared to the Wind River Mountains, where hiking often takes place at elevations of 10,000 to 11,000 feet.
What's one standout hiking memory that shaped your perspective on trails?
Hiking through Canyonlands was a blast, and a hike in a sliderock canyon was especially memorable. We ascended a metal ladder attached to a sandstone wall. It felt like being on a jungle gym, with the thrill of conquering each step as I climbed with my backpack. The whole experience was invigorating!
What led you to join the AHS Board?
I've been an avid hiker and AHS member for over four decades. While serving on the strategic planning committee, I discovered that I could have a more significant impact on hiking by joining the board. Since life is short and I love hiking, it made perfect sense to combine my interests and contribute to the organization.
Why are trails important to someone new to hiking?
Trails offer a new perspective on life, an escape from the demands of daily life. They provide a chance to disconnect and simplify, allowing you to marvel at the beauty of nature and appreciate the world from a fresh vantage point.
New hikers: Here's a piece of advice from Chuck!
Avoid getting lost in the wilderness and steer clear of dangerous situations. I've been lost a few times, and it's a nerve-wracking experience. It's easy to get turned around while doing simple things like finding a bathroom, so always make sure you have a patch of land or a body of water to help guide you back to the trail.
