Blossoming Terrain Encouraged for County Residents, Say Officials in Steinfurt
In the picturesque county of Steinfurt, a new initiative aims to enrich local landscapes and support biodiversity. The Lower Nature Conservation Authority of Steinfurt has introduced the Flowering Area Promotion Program, a project designed to increase the number of original native flowering plants in the region.
Native wildflowers, such as cornflowers, daisies, wild carrots, and common twayblades, are well-adapted to the local climate and soil conditions. However, their numbers have been dwindling, posing a threat to the insects that rely on them for food. These pollinators, including many species of bees and butterflies, are crucial for our ecosystem's balance.
The Flowering Area Promotion Program is open to all citizens, municipalities, associations, and institutions living in Steinfurt County. Whether you're an individual with a garden or a local authority managing public land, you're welcome to participate.
To apply, areas larger than 30 square meters require a written submission to the Lower Nature Conservation Authority. The maximum size for a flowering area is 10,000 square meters. Applications for funding should be submitted as soon as possible for the establishment of a flowering area in the fall.
Jessica Focke, the county's biodiversity officer, recommends autumn as the optimal time for establishing a flowering area. She, along with Esther Susewind and Stefan Kölker, are the contact persons for the program and can be reached via phone and email.
The county of Steinfurt is also partnering with agricultural chambers, environmental offices, and local nature conservation organizations in the district of Steinfurt to support applications for funding the establishment of flower meadows with native plants.
In addition to the aesthetic appeal of wildflowers, their establishment creates habitats for a variety of animal and plant species. Many butterfly caterpillars, for instance, feed exclusively on a single native plant species.
To further incentivize the program, the county is providing certified regional seed for the establishment of flowering areas with native plants for free. Successful establishment and funding of a flowering area require a sunny location and securing and maintaining the area (mowing with removal) for at least five years.
