Bicycle path development in Los Alcázares progresses
Los Alcazares, a charming town on the Spanish coast, is set to undergo a significant transformation with the approval of a five-kilometre two-way bike lane. The Town Council of Los Alcazares gave the green light to the basic plans for this project in July 2024.
This new bike lane is set to make Los Alcazares' waterfront more accessible and enjoyable for everyone, attracting tourists who appreciate towns that are easy and safe to explore by bike. The bike lane will stretch from La Concha Beach to La Hita Beach, running alongside pedestrian paths for the safety of both cyclists and walkers.
The first section of the bike lane, covering 490 metres, is now out for tender. This section extends from Playa de Las Salinas near La Hita to the Spinosa Centre terrace. The makeover includes this new bike lane along the Paseo Marítimo, which forms more than 10% of the full project length.
The responsible authority for this project is the Town Council of Los Alcazares, and the basic concept of the project was approved in May 2023. The bike lane project is part of the town's efforts to improve mobility and reduce reliance on cars, contributing to a healthier and more sustainable town.
Investing in cycling infrastructure can enhance a town's quality of life, boost sustainability, and make public spaces more enjoyable for everyone. Adding a bike lane can encourage more people to cycle, reducing traffic congestion and lowering air pollution. This bike lane project is also tied to broader initiatives like the Eurovelo 8 Mediterranean route and the town's 'Agenda Urbana 2030' plan.
The bike lane project is part of the town's larger vision for its seaside promenade. The town of Los Alcazares is planning a makeover for its promenade, with the bike lane serving as a key component. The bike lane route is divided into 16 sections for construction in stages.
Increased cycling traffic can lead to more footfall along commercial areas, benefiting local businesses. Bike lanes promote physical activity, supporting residents' health and wellbeing. The bike lane will contribute to making Los Alcazares a more attractive destination for tourists and a healthier, more sustainable place for its residents.
