Belfast Launches £580,000 Plan for Enhancing Pedestrian and Cycling Facilities
Belfast City Council has commenced work on the reconstruction and improvement of the existing segregated cycle track and footway along Stranmillis Embankment. The £580,000 investment, announced by the Belfast infrastructure minister, O'Dowd, aims to enhance the city's pedestrian and cycling infrastructure.
The work, which started on Monday, 27 January 2025, is expected to be substantially complete by May 2025, subject to favourable weather conditions. During the carrying out of these improvements, sections of the cycle track and footway may need to be closed. The responsible party for the investment is the Belfast City Council.
The infrastructure department has planned the work operations and traffic management arrangements to minimise inconvenience. Advisory signs and alternative routes will be provided for both vehicular traffic and cyclists. The cycle track will feature new intuitive red surfacing and splayed kerbs to increase safety and usable width for cycling.
The footway reconstruction will significantly improve the pavement surface for pedestrians along the route, although specific details about the nature of the improvements were not provided. The work on Stranmillis Embankment is considered important improvements by the infrastructure department.
In other news, the fourth annual CiTTi Awards will be held on 26 November 2025 at De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in London. These awards recognise and celebrate achievements and innovations in active travel. For more information about the CiTTi Awards, visit www.cittiawards.co.uk.
The public is asked to be patient during the carrying out of these improvements, and the council urges everyone to follow the advisory signs and alternative routes provided.
