Exploring Art Outside Seoul: A Journey through Three Unique Spaces
Art enthusiasts in South Korea often flock to Seoul, but there are hidden gems waiting to be discovered in other parts of the country. Here, we take a look at three noteworthy art museums and galleries outside the capital: Johyun Gallery in Busan, Mimesis Art Museum in Paju, and Koo House Museum in Yangpyeong.
Johyun Gallery in Busan
Located along the 8-kilometer Dalmaji coastal road in Haeundae, Johyun Gallery is a must-visit for those seeking reclusive and bold depictions of nature, particularly wildflowers, emphasizing vitality and emotional expression. Currently, the gallery is hosting a solo exhibition of Korean art master Kim Chong-hak, showcasing the evolution of his painterly practice, with a focus on his drawings.
Mimesis Art Museum in Paju
A 30-minute drive northwest of Seoul, you'll find the Mimesis Art Museum in Paju, Gyeonggi Province. Designed by Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza Vieira, this museum is renowned for its poetic minimalism and architectural harmony with the natural environment. Covering a total area of 3,663 square meters, it uses indirect natural lighting to enhance the artworks and the building's purity. As of August 2025, it is hosting solo exhibitions by painters Suh Yoon-hee ("Where am I") and Lee Hye-in ("Eternal Sunset in My Mind"). Visitors can rest and grab a coffee at a café with a view of greenery outside the window.
Koo House Museum in Yangpyeong
For a unique perspective, visit the Koo House Museum in Yangpyeong, Gyeonggi Province. This museum offers a glimpse into the residence of Koo Jung-soon, Korea's first-generation graphic designer. The building, designed by prominent Korean architect Cho Min-suk, features artworks deeply inspired by nature, particularly wildflowers, with an emphasis on vitality and expressive brushwork. Pets are allowed inside as long as they are kept in a carrier or stroller. The museum was opened by Koo Jung-soon in 2016 and serves as her residence.
These institutions provide culturally rich experiences through their distinctive architecture, thoughtful exhibitions, and integration with natural surroundings, serving as compelling destinations for art lovers outside Seoul. Whether you're in Busan, Paju, or Yangpyeong, these art spaces offer a refreshing change of pace and a deeper appreciation for the beauty of Korean art and design.
