In the heart of Riga, Latvia, the Herb Market at the Riga Central Market is gearing up for another year of celebrating traditional herbs, local produce, and cultural experiences. Despite unfavourable weather, the market, organised by Kitija Riekstiņa, is set to open its doors on Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

With roots dating back to the 1930s, the Riga Central Market is housed in five historic Zeppelin hangars and is one of the largest and most impressive markets in Europe. It serves not just as a bustling marketplace but also as a cultural hub, offering visitors a chance to immerse themselves in traditional Latvian cuisine and products.

The Herb Market, while not explicitly mentioned in historical records, seems to be a significant part of the market's offerings. Among the approximately 280 vendors, there are around 30 herb and flower sellers, including Maija, a weaver and trader from Olaine who has been participating in the Herb Market for 19 years.

Maija's stall features traditional Midsummer herbs used in bouquets, a specific Midsummer tradition for her family. Her family sources the herbs from their own farm, and Maija enjoys creating a festive atmosphere for herself and others during the Herb Market. She stated that all herbs can be considered Midsummer herbs, regardless of their origin.

In addition to herbs and flowers, the market also features craftspeople, offering a wide variety of products for visitors to explore. The market is located at Doma Square, making it easily accessible for locals and tourists alike. Furthermore, there are 90 different home producers at the market, adding to the diversity and authenticity of the offerings.

Visitors to the Herb Market can enjoy trying traditional Latvian foods, such as cheeses, meats, and local delicacies like sprats and pickled vegetables. The market area also hosts various community events, contributing to its vibrant atmosphere.

Whether you're a local or a tourist, the Herb Market at Riga Central Market offers a unique opportunity to experience Latvian culture, traditions, and fresh produce. So, despite the rain and wind, don't forget to visit Maija's stall and immerse yourself in the festive atmosphere of the Herb Market this Friday.
