A Restoration of a Distinguished Craftsman of Carpentry
The iconic Gothenburg Fish Market Hall, known as "Feskekorka," celebrated its reopening in 2024, 150 years after its inception. Originally built in 1874, Feskekorka's renovation aimed to secure its future as Gothenburg's leading marketplace for fish and seafood while restoring its architectural and historical values.
The renovation project, commissioned by the city's real estate company, Higab, in 2018, was a collaborative effort between architects, builders, and representatives of heritage protection. The goal was to carefully preserve the original wooden structures, restore craftsmen techniques, and update infrastructure like ventilation and utilities discreetly underground to avoid altering the historic appearance.
The architect Victor von Gegerfelt's distinctive church-like design was meticulously restored, with the wide joints in the kitchen elements mirroring the masonry design of its facade. The unique timber frame construction, which had been partially replaced with concrete pillars in the 1960s, was also faithfully restored according to the original design.
One of the significant changes was the restoration of the building's former connection to the water, with a large outdoor terrace located directly on the canal Vallgraven. Inside, large window areas, once obstructed by counters, dairy units, and heavy kitchen equipment, have been reopened, allowing natural light to flood the hall once again.
The design of the kitchen elements in the renovated Feskekorka was inspired by the tiled stands that previously zoned the hall. The wide joints in the new elements serve as a tribute to Feskekorka's architectural heritage.
Today, Feskekorka is not just a market but a popular attraction for both locals and tourists. It offers a variety of fish and seafood, as well as restaurants and bars. The renovation has breathed new life into this historic building, ensuring its continued role as a symbol of Gothenburg's rich maritime history.
The regional administration, Lansstyrelsen, approved the renovation, praising its success in preserving the spirit of the historic building. The reopening of Feskekorka was a significant event for the people of Gothenburg, marking a successful blend of history and modernity.
