A BMW motorcycle engine has been repurposed to create a coffee machine - an unexpected and intriguing transformation, indeed!

A BMW motorcycle engine has been utilized in the construction of a coffee machine, an incredible reality.

In a groundbreaking collaboration, BMW Motorrad, ECM Manufacture, and coffee roaster Dallmayr have unveiled the ECM x BMW Motorrad Big Coffee Boxer – a limited-edition, high-end espresso machine that fuses the power and heritage of BMW's motorcycle engineering with the art of coffee brewing.

The Big Coffee Boxer boasts real engine parts from BMW’s 1802cc R 18 Big Boxer motorcycle engine, creating a machine that looks like a piece of motorcycle heritage for the kitchen. This unique design features the motorcycle's iconic two-cylinder heads, giving it a sculptural and mechanical presence.

Key features and specifications include:

  • Limited production run: Only 80 units will be made, making it highly exclusive.
  • Dual boilers: It has two independently operating water circulation systems, allowing simultaneous espresso extraction and milk steaming.
  • Boiler capacity: A 1.9-liter stainless steel boiler is included for consistent heat management.
  • Professional-grade steam and hot water valves for precise control.
  • Pressure gauges: Separate dials for each boiler’s pressure, enabling accurate monitoring of extraction pressure and steam pressure.
  • Rotary pump: Ensures quiet, reliable water pressure delivery for espresso extraction.
  • Selectable temperature settings: Three temperature options for fine-tuning coffee extraction.
  • Preinfusion feature: Can be turned on or off to control the initial water flow over the grounds, improving espresso quality.
  • Shot counter display: Helps track when backflushing (cleaning) is necessary.
  • Weight: The machine weighs approximately 140 pounds (about 63.5 kg), reflecting its robust construction with heavy engine parts.
  • Design elements: It includes a purpose-built metal stand and a seemingly floating drip tray, contributing to its unique aesthetic that appeals to both motorbike and coffee enthusiasts.

Priced at around €7,900 including VAT (about $9,100 to $9,200 USD), the Big Coffee Boxer is available exclusively through ECM Manufacture’s Exclusiv Line dealers in Germany. No plans for further production after the initial 80 units are sold have been announced.

As part of the collaboration, the Big Coffee Boxer comes paired with Dallmayr’s “Italian Vibe” espresso roast. This exclusive partnership merges the best of German engineering and Italian coffee culture, offering a truly unique coffee experience for connoisseurs and collectors alike.

The Big Coffee Boxer is both a functional high-end espresso maker and a collector’s item celebrating BMW’s heritage in engineering and design merged with coffee culture. Its sizable size requires plenty of countertop space in a kitchen for display and use, making it a statement piece for any coffee enthusiast's home.

This luxury espresso machine, the Big Coffee Boxer, blends elements of food-and-drink and home-and-garden by combining the art of coffee brewing with a mechanical aesthetic reminiscent of home appliances such as gadgets and technology. The machine's unique design, featuring engine parts from BMW's 1802cc R 18 Big Boxer motorcycle engine, aligns it closely with the lifestyle of motorbike enthusiasts.
